DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Nationwide

Every visit starts with

Level 1 sweep and inspection to the NFPA 211 annual standard - flue, crown, cap, and flashing checked and photographed

Worth knowing

Chimney sweep logs do not sweep chimneys. They loosen some creosote - which then falls where a brush and vacuum still have to collect it.

DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation: The Downingtown Owner’s Guide

We stock and install DuraFlex-compatible chimney caps across Downingtown and Chester County, with most replacements running $280-$520 installed depending on flue diameter and whether your crown needs sealing work. Most DuraFlex cap swaps we book are done in a single visit because we carry the common 6-inch, 7-inch, and 8-inch stainless collars on every truck. You’ll usually discover the cap failed after finding rust flakes in the firebox, water stains on the hearth after a hard rain, or hearing something rattling loose up top during the windy stretches that roll through the East Brandywine valley each March and November.

Which DuraFlex Models This Applies To

DuraFlex caps thread onto the flue collar of DuraFlex stainless steel liner systems, not onto bare clay flue tiles. The critical match point is your liner diameter, stamped on the collar tag or measurable with a tape across the inner opening: 6″, 7″, 8″, or the less common 10″ found in some of the larger Rumford-style fireplaces in the 1930s colonials near Downingtown’s West Lancaster corridor. We also see the 5.5″ transitional size on certain DuraFlex 316Ti installations from the early 2010s.

The OEM DuraFlex cap carries the part number prefix DFC (DFC600, DFC700, etc.) and includes the stainless mesh spark arrestor and rain skirt as one assembly. Aftermarket equivalents from Gelco and Olympia Chimney fit the same collar thread but vary in mesh gauge and lid pitch. For Downingtown’s wet shoulder seasons and the freeze-thaw cycling we get along the Brandywine Creek drainage, we typically recommend the OEM DuraFlex cap or the Olympia equivalent with its steeper 30-degree lid, which sheds ice faster than the standard 22-degree aftermarket pitch. If your liner tag is worn off, we measure on-site and match it before ordering. Level Two Chimney Downingtown is an independent service provider, not affiliated with DuraFlex.

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing

Signs Your DuraFlex Chimney Cap Installation Is Failing
  • Rust-stained flue collar or firebox floor. DuraFlex caps are 304 or 316 stainless, but the spot-welded mesh band at the base can trap moisture against the collar thread. In Downingtown’s humid summers, that trapped water starts surface corrosion that bleeds orange down the flue face. We catch this regularly on camera during pre-winter sweeps in the older homes near Kerr Park.
  • Water on the hearth after wind-driven rain. The cap’s rain skirt is supposed to overhang the flue tile by at least 3/4 inch. When the mesh band corrodes through or the lid gets dented by a falling branch, water enters at an angle and runs down the liner to the smoke shelf. We documented this exact failure pattern on a 2019 DuraFlex installation in Bradford Hills last October.
  • Mesh screen pulled loose or missing sections. Squirrels and starlings will pry at the spark arrestor mesh if they smell creosote residue. A gap larger than a quarter lets nesting material enter, which is both a fire hazard and a carbon monoxide risk if it blocks the flue. We pull bird nests from caps every April in Downingtown; it’s predictable as the daffodils.
  • Lid sitting crooked or rattling in wind. The set screw or tension band that holds the lid to the mesh body can fatigue after 8-12 years of thermal cycling. Once the lid loosens, it acts like a weather vane, working the collar thread loose and eventually backing the whole cap off the flue. We find these tilted at 15 degrees, ready to drop.
  • Soot or creosote buildup on the cap exterior. A properly drafting flue should send all combustion gases up and out. When the cap mesh is partially clogged with debris or the lid is too low-profile for your flue height, smoke lingers and deposits tarry residue on the outside. That’s a sign the cap isn’t venting, not just that it’s dirty.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

Service Component Price Range (Downingtown)
DuraFlex OEM cap, 6″-8″ standard $185-$295
Olympia or Gelco equivalent $145-$220
Labor: remove, inspect collar, install, seal $95-$225
Crown sealant touch-up (if needed) $45-$85
Typical total installed $280-$520

What drives the range: flue height above the roofline (taller = more ladder time), whether the collar thread needs cleaning or re-tapping, and if the crown surface around the flue needs resealing to prevent the next round of water intrusion. We deliver a written price before any work starts, Clause 1 of the Haven Standard, and that price includes the cap, labor, a camera scan of the flue top to confirm collar integrity, and a photo record of the completed installation under Clause 4. The 365-Day Done Right Promise covers the workmanship; manufacturer defect coverage runs through DuraFlex’s warranty on OEM parts.

You can safely check whether your cap is loose by sighting up from the firebox with a flashlight, or by photographing the flue top from a second-story window with a zoom lens. Do not climb the roof to torque on it yourself. The collar thread is stainless-on-stainless and can gall if cross-threaded, and a dropped cap from roof height is a liability you don’t need. More critically, a cap that has been leaking may have hidden corrosion at the flue collar that only shows on camera. We inspect that joint with a scope before reinstalling anything. If you’re comfortable on a ladder and have a helper, you can measure your flue diameter and call us with the number. Otherwise, we’ll handle the roof work, the camera check, and the torque spec.
